Ο Γουόλτερ Μπλακ υποφέρει από κατάθλιψη. Η γυναίκα του, Μέρεντιθ, τον βλέπει να καταρρέει. Ο μικρότερος γιος του, Χένρι, γίνεται ερημίτης. Ο μεγαλύτερος, ο Πόρτερ, γράφει τις εκθέσεις των συμμαθητών του για να κερδίζει χρήματα. Η εταιρία παιχνιδιών του Γουόλτερ οδεύει προς την πτώχευση. Όταν η Μέρεντιθ τον διώχνει από το σπίτι, ο απελπισμένος άνδρας αρχίζει να πίνει και θέλει να αυτοκτονήσει. Μετά από μια αποτυχημένη προσπάθεια, ανακαλύπτει έκπληκτος ότι ο Μπίβερ - μια κούκλα κάστορας που είχε βρει στα σκουπίδια - του μιλά και μάλιστα με βρετανική προφορά. Με τη βοήθεια του Μπίβερ, επιστρέφει σπίτι. Μόνο που τα πράγματα παίρνουν μια ανεξέλεγκτη τροπή, όταν ο Μπίβερ αποκτά τον απόλυτο έλεγχο της ζωής του Γουόλτερ.
