Στις αρχές του προηγούμενου αιώνα ο Peter Lake είναι ένας φτωχοδιάβολος που προσπαθεί να επιβιώσει στην παγωμένη Νέα Υόρκη. Αποφασίζει να διαρρήξει ένα πολυτελέστατο αρχοντικό στο Upper West Side, πιστεύοντας ότι το σπίτι είναι άδειο. Μόνο που μέσα βρίσκεται η νεαρή κόρη της οικογένειας, η Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). Ο έρωτάς ανάμεσά τους θα είναι καταδικασμένος καθώς η Beverly είναι βαριά άρρωστη ενώ την ίδια στιγμή ο Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe) καταδιώκει τον νεαρό άντρα. Μετά το θάνατό της Beverly ο Peter βρίσκει τον εαυτό του ξαναγεννημένο στη Νέα Υόρκη του σήμερα... χωρίς μνήμη και στο επίκεντρο της μάχης καλού και κακού.
