"Στο μακρινό μέλλον και σε μια εποχή που τα υποκατάστατα του ανθρώπου (ανθρωποειδή ρομπότ) κυριαρχούν, ένας επιστήμονας κατασκευάζει ένα ομοίωμα του πρόσφατα χαμένου γιου του. Η ιδιαιτερότητα αυτού του ""11χρονου"" μηχανικού παιδιού είναι η ικανότητα του ν'αγαπάει. Το πειραματικό αυτό μοντέλο, που φέρει το όνομα Ντέιβιντ, πωλείται σε μια οικογένεια ώστε να αντικαταστήσει το φυσικό τους γιο που βρίσκεται για χρόνια σε κώμα.Και ενώ όλα βαίνουν καλώς για το νέο μέλος της οικογένειας, ο πραγματικός γιος ξυπνά απ'το λήθαργο που βρισκόταν, γεγονός που φέρνει συγκρούσεις στο σπίτι, ανάμεσα στην ανθρώπινη και τη μηχανική αγάπη. Οι γονείς του Ντέιβιντ αναγκάζονται να τον εγκαταλείψουν στο δάσος αβοήθητο.Μια πραγματική Οδύσσεια περιμένει το μικρό ρομπότ που ψάχνει απεγνωσμένα το δρόμο για το σπίτι. Συμπαράσταση στο δύσκολο αυτό δρόμο βρίσκει στο πρόσωπο ενός επικηρυγμένου για φόνο ανδροειδούς, που..."
