Βρισκόμαστε σε έναν μελλοντικό ιδεατό κόσμο. Δεν υπάρχουν αντιπαλότητες, ούτε ρατσισμός, ούτε ασθένειες, και κάθε μέλος της κοινωνίας έχει εξειδικευμένο ρόλο. Ο 11χρονος Τζόνας έχει επιλεχτεί ως «αποδέκτης αναμνήσεων». Ήρθε κι ο καιρός που πρέπει να εκπαιδευτεί πάνω σε αυτό, κάτι στο οποίο τον βοηθάει ο «δότης». Από τον δότη, ο Τζόνας θα μάθει για τον παλιό κόσμο, τον πόνο, τη δυστυχία και τους πολέμους. Σύντομα γνωρίζει πως ο κόσμος που ζει είναι ψεύτικος και πως οι πρόγονοι του αψήφησαν την ανθρωπιά τους για μια σταθερή κοινωνία. Τώρα, ο νεαρός πρέπει να πάρει δύσκολες αποφάσεις τόσο για τη ζωή του, όσο το ίδιο το μέλλον.
