O «Ροζ Πάνθηρας» είναι ένα από μεγαλύτερα (σε μέγεθος και αξία) διαμάντια του κόσμου! Κάτοχός του είναι ο προπονητής ποδοσφαίρου της εθνικής ομάδας της Γαλλίας, ο οποίος το φοράει εν είδη δαχτυλιδιού στα χέρια του. Αυτό δεν μπορεί παρά να τραβάει την προσοχή επίδοξων ληστών. Και δεν αργεί να γίνει και η ληστεία: μέσα σε ένα γεμάτο από φιλάθλους γήπεδο, ο προπονητής δολοφονείται και ο «Ροζ Πάνθηρας»... εξαφανίζεται!Την υπόθεση αναλαμβάνει ο αρχηγός της Γαλλικής Αστυνομίας, Ντρέιφους. Θεωρώντας πως είναι πολύ εύκολο να βρει τον ή τους ληστές, στήνει ολόκληρη κομπίνα για να μεγιστοποιήσει τα όποια οφέλη αυτής της υπόθεσης. Αναθέτει την ανεύρεση των ληστών και δολοφόνων στον χειρότερο αστυνόμο που έχει στο τμήμα του, τον Κλουζό. Το σχέδιό του είναι πως ο Κλουζό θα τα κάνει θάλασσα, οπότε ο ίδιος (ο Ντρέιφους) θα εμφανιστεί για να βάλει τα πράγματα στη θέση τους και να αυξήσει την δημοτικό...
